Spatula Review skit for Looneys Hack Show, Episode 2 : Dead Things Welcome to Spatula Review, where we examine and compare the newest and best in spatulas each week. This week we're going to be doing comparisons of non-scratching spatulas. We have three spatulas up for rating today. The first one is this entirely plastic spatula. (show views of spatula) As you can see, our test spatula was a sky-blue Folga Du-Line Classic. It is available in many other designer colors as well. This spatula did do what we requested, that is, it was non scratching. It was also the most inexpensive of the spatulas we review this week. As with most plastic spatulas, the base was thicker than those of metal spatulas. However, on this model, the base was molded to a point so as to assist lifting and flipping of food. The handle contained a fairly standard hole for hanging storage. However, it's entirely plastic body leaves something to be desired. We tested this spatula by cooking up some powdered toast. It's great for doing small jobs. but it doesn't cut it for opening lids, prying nails, and other household spatula uses. Cleanup of this spatula soon after use isn't bad, except around the edges, where food tends to stick. However, after sitting for a few days, food does get caked on rather well. In summary, Folga Du-Line Classic Spatula Hits: available colors make easy color-combining with the kitchen Misses: All plastic design limits it to light jobs Specs: Handling: 3 of 5 Surface area: 2.8 in * 3.4 in (7.2 cm * 8.7 cm) 9.5 sq. in. (62.5 cm^2) Thickness: 2 mm (3 / 32 in) (narrows at edges) Capabilities: 2 of 5 Features: 3 of 5 East of Cleaning: 3 of 5 Cost: ? Our next spatula is the USA Spatula Corp W-7. This spatula is a big improvement over the Folga Du-Line, but it also costs more. The unit is a combination metal and plastic spatula. However, the company skimped on the base to lower prices and save money and the upshot is a nice looking, but not well working, spatula. You can see the spatula has a metal handle, which is covered by a plastic grip for cool handling. However, the metal frame only extends about one quarter of the way through the base. The rest of the base is unreinforced plastic, leaving it too weak for heavier jobs. This spatula also was built with edges molded to a point on the edges, but again shoddy design on this model leaves much to be desired. Cleanup on this unit is comparable to others. Our overall opinion of this spatula is that it's a nice try. It looks nice, has a good feel, but when put to actual work, it just doesn't cut it. For similar prices, there are much better spatulas out there. Hits: Looks sleek, metal handle, plastic cool grip. Misses: Poor design - only partially metal. -Inclined edges Specs: Handling: 2 of 5 Surface area: 2.5in * 3.8in (6.4cm * 9.7cm) 9.5 sq. in. (62.2 cm^2) Thickness: 3mm (4 / 32 in) (narrows at edges, but crudely) Capabilities: 2 of 5 Features: 3 of 5 East of Cleaning: 3 of 5 Cost: ? Last spatula The last spatula we reviewed is a CromSpat Chrome-Plate 01 model with the teflon option. This model has an all-metal frame with standard plastic cool grip. This makes it great for all-purpose work for those who don't mind damaging the teflon coating - an option which is not cheap. An extra large hanging storage hole makes it a breeze to store and retrieve this spatula from even the strangest shaped hooks. The all-black teflon coating, the diagonal front end, and the reduced size base give this spatula a really sporty look. However, the diagonal front makes for difficult handling, and the reduced size base limits job size. But again, this is a metal spatula and therefore has a thin base, which makes up for many of the handling problems. The cleanup on this spatula is a breeze with the teflon coating. Hits: Easy clean up, thin base makes for easy pick up, all-metal frame makes it great for all uses Misses: Problems with handling from diagonal front end, cost Specs: Options: Teflon coating Handling: 3 of 5 Surface area: 2.4 in * 3.4 in (6.1 cm * 8.7 cm) 8.2 sq. in (53.3 cm^2) Thickness: .4 mm (1 / 64 in) Capabilities: 5 of 5 Features: 5 of 5 East of Cleaning: 5 of 5 Cost: ?
