I'm glad to see everyone back for this weeks eating disorder meeting. [close-up] I'm Gene Symbolic Link, the facilitator of this meeting. I see we've got a few new people here today. Could you introduce yourselves. Ned StickyBit My name is Ned StickyBit. Mary Syscall I'm Mary Syscall. [center counselor, include people on both sides. One person is taking popcorn and sticking it in his/her ear as counselor speaks] Counselor Okay, great. Now, to get more of an open environment flowing here, and to make us understand eachother better, why we tell each other about our specific disorders. Mary, would you start? [close-up] Mary Oh.. Okay. My disorder is that I have a fear of biting my food. Counselor Could you be a little more specific? Are you afraid to bite all food or just specific ones? Mary Specific ones. Bananas, pickles, hot dogs. Things like that. Counselor Is this a new problem, or has it just come about suddenly, or has it developed slowly over time? [center mary, include people on both sides. One person has a donut on a plate, and is eating crumb by crumb with tweasers, inspecting each piece carefully. The other person is folding up a piece of bread neatly] Mary It came about suddenly a few months ago. It happened after my boy--- Boyfriend and I were in a car accident. We were pulled off on the side of Lovers Lane, up near the lake one night. The lights were off. Someone crashed into the back of the car while we were-- Uh-- busy. Counselor [apparently shaken] Oh.. Is your boyfriend okay? [the person with the bread makes a last fold, creasing it with his/her fingernail. Person then takes out a ruler and measures bread.] Mary Well. Um... He's seen a few experts and they've said that reconstructive surgery would be difficult. So he's decided to go with reassignment. We've decided to stay together after the operation though. Counselor I wish you luck trying to stay together. I'm glad you could talk about it, talking is the beginning to solving the problem. Let's come back to Mary's problem later. Ned, I see you've [cut to ned, trying to shove a banana in his ear] got a little different problem from Mary, how long have you been trying to consume food with your ear? [ned stops and looks around] [show cut of group staring at ned] Ned What? Counselor How long have you been trying to eat bananas with your ear? Ned Speak up? [cocks ear toward counselor, there is banana goop in it] Counselor [yelling, speaking intentionally] How long have you been trying to eat the banana with your ear? Ned [looks confused, turns to neighbor] What's he want? Counselor [upset] Forget it. Just -- don't worry about it. Is there anyone here who's got a simple bulemia disorder, where you throw up after eating? [show shot of group looking at eachother. No one raises hand. There is a consensus of "no's."] Counselor [takes a breath] Okay, you. Joel. Tell us about your disorder. Joel Well, when I eat, I hear music. Counselor Have you checked to see if the stereo is on. Joel Yes, I checked that at first. At first I didn't know where the sound came from, but now I know that when I'm chewing my mouth makes music. Counselor And you weren't wearing a walkman. Joel No. Counselor No you weren't wearing a walkman or no you didn't check if you were wearing a walkman? Joel No, the music was not coming from my walkman. It came from my mouth. Counselor Nearby greeting cards? Joel [getting irRITated] The music came from my mouth. Give me something to eat and I'll show you. Counselor Okay. In my bag today I brought a tape recorder. To show you that your mouth doesn't play music when you chew, we'll tape record it and play it back. [Pulls out tape recorder and p&J sandwich] Here's a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Okay? Joel Fair enough. [takes sandwich] [Joel goes to take a bite, then stops. Counselor is holding microphone up to joel's mouth] [Joel begins to eat] [begin open credit music] [show cut of people staring incredulously at Joel] [close up of joel's mouth, and Joel taking a bite] [transition video to open credits] [time=2:30]
